Stress & Ayurveda

Stress & Ayurveda
Stress is the physical response of the body and mind to an event happening in our life. In Ayurveda, stress is known as SAHASA – it causes loss of immunity and makes the body vulnerable to various diseases. Unhealthy food, irregular or improper routines and uncontrolled mental emotions like fear, anger, grief, etc. can lead to stress.
Ayurveda says that emotions are directly connected to bodily organs. When a negative emotion is suppressed, it stresses the organs leading to diseases. From an Ayurvedic perspective, stress is a disturbed state of the nervous system which is regulated by the Vata Dosha. Ayurvedic methods of treating stress not only maintain the balance in the body and mind but also progressively raise the levels of inner happiness and satisfaction.

Ayurvedic treatments have basically two aims:

1. Maintain the health of a healthy person

2. Cure the disease of an ill person

Lifestyle modifications, as given in Ayurveda, accomplish both the above aims in the management of stress. According to Ayurveda, life is a balanced combination of body, mind, and soul. To achieve a balanced state, Ayurveda recommends lifestyle modifications. For example – scheduling activities like sleep and waking up, balanced diet plans, proper exercise and rest.
When it comes to the treatments, Poorvakarma like Snehana and Panchakarma, Nasya, Virechana and Vasthi, followed by Sirodhara, Sirovasthi, and Thakradhara, along with internal Ayurvedic medicines are recommended.
