MANAGEMENT OF STHOULYA (OBESITY) THROUGH UDWARTHANA

Synopsis

A cohort study done with patients affected by Sthoulya and treated with Udwarthana
Period: 6 months | Sample size: 10

STHOULYA TREATMENT: NEED OF THE HOUR

Sthoulya, correlated with obesity in contemporary science, is a major worldwide health problem. This lifestyle condition has grown to epidemic proportions, with over 4 million people dying each year as a result of being overweight or obese. Illnesses linked to high body fat are type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, and cancer of the breast and colon. Kapha and Pitta vitiation are the major contributing pathological factors in Sthoulya.

BODY MASS INDEX

There are different tests that measure the quantity of body fat, but the most used is the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body’s height, and is expressed in units of kg/m2, resulting from mass in kilograms (kg) and height in metres (m).
The Body Mass Index (BMI) and the weight status it refers to:

CONCLUSION

Sthoulya is one among the Santarpanotta Vyadhi. It is caused due to Avyayama, Diva Swapna, and Shleshmala Ahara Sevana. This causes Anna Rasa to become sweet, thereby resulting in the accumulation of fat. In Sthoulya, Rookshana Karmas like Udwarthana play an important role in managing the condition.
In Sthoulya patients, even after weight loss by Udwarthana procedure, it is essential to follow proper Ahara and Vihara for the maintenance of healthy wellbeing. Out of 10 patients studied, 70% showed major improvement and 30% of patients showed moderate improvement. Hence, it can be inferred from the study that Udwarthana procedure plays an effective role in the management of Sthoulya.
